We, a group of mothers in this country have decided to look back at our past experience and invite all to join us in seeking viable solutions.

This is in view of the current instabilities in the region and the precarious situation of Iran, where the country is inflicted by unemployment, inflation and high cost of living primarily caused by disabling policies which in turn into increasing social problems.

We are a group of Iranian Mothers for Peace in Iran. We are diverse, in terms of ethnicity, religion and ideology. We are writing to you because we are deeply worried about the crisis which has been created in relation to our country and the region.

We are writing and publishing this letter at a time that the leaders of powerful countries in the world are engaged in discussing our country in a hostile and threatening manner. Please note that the two sides of the existing crisis are not just the leaders of different governments and the states. there is also another side – the people of Iran – who with their tied hands and feet can be sacrificed in the middle of these hostilities.

The Security Council has been using the behavior of Iranian statesmen as an excuse to issue a number of resulotion against our country. the Statesmen come and go, but the people and their society are always there. the Security Council must not sacrifice the people and their society in the name of the behavior of the governments and the states.

You know very well that sanctions, occupations, war and destructions will stop countries to develop, as the actual and potential forces of development will be destroyed. The energy of the people, especially women and children of both sides, will either be concentrated on mourning the loss of their loved ones and / or on carrying on their shoulders, the heavy burden of the physical and psychological damages to their loved ones.

The Security Council knows well that economic sanctions will not have any effect on the war makers’ ability to acquire military equipments; or those who are seeking the techniques and knowledge to contribute to death and destruction, as they can always arrive at their aim and objectives in unofficial ways. Sanctions have never affected the statesmen. Although the aim of the Security Council is to put pressure on the statesmen, in effect only the ordinary people have been the victim of poverty and, therefore, have been punished; Especially women, children and the sick people who have been suffering most as the result of the sanctions. If even the war does not occur, sanctions and foreign interference in the internal disputes of the countries will negatively affect the process of economic and human development.

Needless to say that the countries which possess atomic bombs and weapons of mass destruction, could be considered a threat to the world peace. However, can you treat the people of these countries as a threat to the people of the world?. Why the Security Council allows the people of Iran to be punished in the name of condemning the government of Iran of not complying with international treaties. War and sanctions are the business of the governments. The Security Council must not allow the people of Iran to become the victim of such a destructive business.

Considering the coming of the next treaties and sanctions against Iran, we demand from the Security Council to pressurize those statesmen who use war mongering and threatening language against Iran and to demand from them to respect the people of Iran.

We believe in the importance of dialogue to avoid conflict between governments and states. We believe peace is the right of all nations. We therefore demand from the Security Council to stop those states that beat the drum of war, push for sanction and encourage internal conflicts between nations and even military attack against other countries in the name of democracy and human rights. The Security Council should not allow the tragic events of Iraq and Afghanistan to be repeated once again in this region.

Please do realize that foreign pressures play the most important role in the suppression and the defeat of democracies in these countries.

You are a responsible institution. Please do not allow the world to witness yet another war, conflict, violence, destruction and poverty.

We are a group of mothers from Iran with diverse ethnic and religious background.  We spent our youth struggling against the Shah's dictatorship and imperialism; we are the mothers who participated in the revolution with the hope of living in a free and prosperous Iran, where there would be justice.  To achieve our goal we paid a heavy price during the eight years of the imposed Iran/Iraq war, followed by heavy economic sanctions when we endured various forms of hardships, the least, waiting patiently in long queues every day only to provide basic food items for our families.  We are the mothers who gave our children pride, honor and the spirit to seek justice, freedom, independence and peace.

In the current critical time, as a group of mothers   we have come together to protect our country and our people's aspirations against the existing threats.  We sacrificed our youth for realization of such aspirations;  now we don't want to witness the younger generation  pay the same price; instead we wish them to enjoy peace, justice and democracy.

We call ourselves the "Mothers for Peace" not only because we oppose war but we demand security and peace for the citizens, and we protest against anything that jeopardizes our social, political and economic security; foremost the lives of our young people.

We are mothers who are worried about our county, we lost many young people in the revolution, in the war and in prisons; we don't want the history to be repeated.   We will not allow any excuses to be given to foreign powers to invade Iran in the name of democracy.  We believe the Iranian people themselves will establish justice and democracy.

We believe the arrest, detention and harassment of teachers, students, nurses, journalists, writers, clericals, workers, as well as women activists under various excuses, are the same tactics used by the domineering foreign powers that are waiting to seize the opportunity to attack our country, or exert heavy sanctions on Iran in the name of violation of human rights.

We "Mothers for Peace" will struggle to attain security, freedom and justice;  in other words  human rights for ourselves and our children.  We call upon all mothers in Iran to join us in achieving our goals.

In hope of victory;  not in war but against war.
